Apple to Discontinue iPhone SE 3 and iPhone 14 in the EU

Big changes are coming for Apple’s iPhone lineup in Europe. In compliance with the European Union's USB-C mandate, Apple will stop selling the iPhone SE 3, iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus in the EU by the end of this month. Here’s what you need to know about this shift and what it means for customers.

The End of Lightning Ports

The EU’s new directive requires all mobile phones and certain other devices sold in the region to adopt a universal USB-C charging port by December 28, 2024. This mandate is part of the EU’s push for sustainability and reducing electronic waste by making chargers interchangeable across devices. Rather than updating the iPhone SE 3 and iPhone 14 series with USB-C ports, Apple has opted to remove these Lightning-based models from its lineup in the EU.

Which Devices Are Affected?

According to reports, Apple will no longer sell the iPhone SE 3, iPhone 14, or iPhone 14 Plus in its online or physical stores in the EU. This decision aligns with the EU’s strict requirements but also eliminates some of Apple’s more affordable options for European customers.

The Broader Impact of the USB-C Mandate

The EU’s "common charging" requirements go beyond smartphones. Starting December 28, 2024, the mandate will apply to tablets, headphones, e-readers, and more. By April 28, 2026, laptops will also need to comply. The transition period gives companies like Apple time to adapt, but it’s clear the USB-C era is here to stay.

A New iPhone SE on the Horizon

While saying goodbye to the iPhone SE 3 and iPhone 14 is bittersweet, there’s good news on the way. Apple is widely expected to launch the iPhone SE 4 in spring 2025. The new model will feature a USB-C port, aligning with the EU mandate, and is anticipated to have a more affordable price point compared to the iPhone 16 series.

Looking Ahead

This transition marks the end of an era for Lightning ports and a significant shift for Apple’s product lineup in Europe. Although it reduces lower-cost options in the short term, the anticipated iPhone SE 4 promises to bring exciting new features and compliance with EU regulations.
