Apple Reportedly Testing M5 iPad Pro Ahead of Late 2025 Launch

Apple is already deep into advanced testing of its next-generation iPad Pro, and it looks like the upcoming model will be one of the first devices to feature the powerful new M5 chip, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
The M5 iPad Pro, which is expected to launch before the end of 2025, could mark one of the most significant performance upgrades for Apple’s premium tablet line yet.
iPad Pro with M5: What We Know So Far
Internally, the new iPad Pro models are going by code names J817, J818, J820, and J821. Gurman reports that they are in the late stages of testing within Apple’s labs, with mass production set to begin in the second half of 2025.
While exact specs are still under wraps, the addition of the M5 chip suggests Apple is doubling down on performance and efficiency for its most powerful iPad.
Looking Ahead: M6 and In-House Modems
Even more interesting is that Apple has already started early development on M6-powered iPads that will integrate in-house modem chips, signaling a long-term shift away from relying on third-party modems like those from Qualcomm. Those M6 iPads are reportedly aimed for a 2027 release.
This strategy could give Apple more control over the iPad’s connectivity features, while also aligning with their broader goal of building more components in-house.
Recent iPad Updates and What’s Next
Apple recently refreshed the iPad Air and entry-level iPad, offering better performance at slightly discounted prices ($50 off the Air, $20 off the base model). The iPad mini, updated in late 2024, didn’t get another round of upgrades this time.
The iPad Air has been a strong performer in the lineup, especially during the holiday season, driving double-digit revenue growth, according to Gurman. Meanwhile, a processor-focused refresh is already being planned for the standard iPad, continuing Apple’s “chip-and-ship” strategy for that segment.
A Clear Focus on the Future of iPad
Although the current iPad Pro with the M4 chip and new design launched just last May, Apple appears to be moving quickly to stay ahead of the curve. With the M5 iPad Pro in advanced testing, Apple seems determined to ensure its flagship tablet remains at the forefront of performance and innovation.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the M5 iPad Pro as more details emerge—a late 2025 release is looking likely, and it could be one of the most exciting iPad updates in years.
