Apple Reportedly Developing Two New Studio Display Models
Share
Apple is preparing to refresh its Studio Display lineup, with two new models reportedly in development, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. The current Studio Display, launched in 2022 alongside the Mac Studio, has held up well in terms of design but is beginning to show its age in a market that continues to push display technology forward. Now, Apple appears to be addressing this with a meaningful upgrade expected in the coming years.
What to Expect from the New Studio Displays
Apple is said to be working on two models, code-named J427 and J527. While details are still scarce, here’s what we know so far:
- J427 is expected to replace the existing Studio Display and could arrive as early as late 2025 or early 2026. Apple seems to be taking its time to ensure it delivers a worthwhile upgrade rather than just a minor refresh.
- J527 is a bit more mysterious. Gurman speculates that it might not be a direct successor to J427 but could serve as a different variant in Apple’s lineup.
Could Apple Be Planning a Pro Display XDR Replacement?
One possibility is that J527 could be a next-generation Pro Display XDR, Apple’s high-end 32-inch, 6K monitor, which hasn’t seen an update since its release in 2019. Given how long the Pro Display XDR has gone without a refresh, it would make sense for Apple to be developing a more advanced display aimed at professionals.
Alternatively, Apple may be testing both models and will only bring one to market, but the timeline suggests we could see two distinct display options, possibly with different screen sizes or panel technologies.
Keeping Apple’s External Display Lineup Competitive
Apple’s Studio Display and Pro Display XDR have been key accessories for Mac users, particularly creatives and professionals who rely on high-resolution, color-accurate monitors. With competitors continuing to push innovation in OLED, mini-LED, and high refresh rate displays, Apple’s move to update its lineup signals a commitment to keeping its monitors competitive.
While pricing, specs, and other details remain under wraps, we can expect more information to emerge as 2025 progresses. For now, Apple users looking for a new external display option may want to keep an eye on these upcoming releases.
