Apple Reportedly Developing New 27-Inch Studio Display with Mini-LED
Share
Apple is working on a new 27-inch Studio Display, which could launch by the end of 2025, according to a report from Ross Young, a well-known display industry analyst.
Mini-LED Upgrade for Better Display Quality
The biggest upgrade in the new Studio Display is expected to be mini-LED backlighting, replacing the standard LED backlight found in the current model. Mini-LED technology enhances display performance by offering:
- Improved contrast and black levels for deeper, richer images
- Higher brightness for better visibility in all lighting conditions
- Superior color accuracy for creative professionals
- Better energy efficiency compared to traditional LED displays
What We Know About the Current Studio Display
Apple introduced the first-generation Studio Display in 2022, positioning it as a high-quality external monitor for Mac users. The display is currently priced at $1,599, though it is on sale for $1,299.99 at Amazon today.
The current model features:
- 27-inch 5K Retina Display with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 at 218 PPI
- 600 nits of brightness
- 12MP Ultra Wide camera with Center Stage for improved video calls
- Six-speaker system with Spatial Audio for immersive sound
- "Studio-quality" microphones for crisp voice recording
- One Thunderbolt 3 port and three USB-C ports
- 96W power delivery to charge MacBooks
What Else Could Change?
Aside from the display panel upgrade, Apple has not confirmed any other improvements. However, Mark Gurman has hinted in his latest report that he may share more details in his upcoming Power On newsletter.
His comment, "Yes - Project J427. Coming by 2026," suggests that Apple is actively working on the product and that we may see additional updates beyond just mini-LED technology.
When to Expect the New Studio Display
While Ross Young predicts a 2025 launch, Gurman’s response suggests that the release window could extend into early 2026. If Apple sticks to its usual update cycle, an announcement could come in late 2025, with availability following shortly after.
For now, professionals and Mac users looking for a premium display should keep an eye on further reports, as Apple continues refining its external monitor lineup.
