Apple Intelligence Is Here: What You Need to Know
Share
The wait is over! Apple has finally launched its Apple Intelligence features with the release of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. Unlike typical updates, which focus on minor improvements and bug fixes, this one brings something huge that has been a long time coming. Let’s dive into what Apple Intelligence is all about and why it’s such a big deal.
A Long-Awaited Debut
Apple Intelligence features weren’t quite ready when iOS 18 initially rolled out, which was a bit disappointing considering that the new iPhone 16 series was promoted as being "built for Apple Intelligence." But today, the wait is over, and those advanced features are finally here. However, keep in mind that not all devices will benefit equally—iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 lineup are the main beneficiaries.
What Can Apple Intelligence Do?
So, what exactly can you expect from Apple Intelligence? Here are some of the key features:
-
Generative Writing Tools: You’ll be able to use proofreading, rewriting, and text summarization tools to make your written communication more polished and effective.
-
Live Transcriptions: Live transcriptions are available for phone calls and audio recordings in the Notes app. Even better, Apple Intelligence can generate summaries of these transcriptions, making it easier for you to capture important information.
-
Photo and Video Organization: In the overhauled Photos app, Apple Intelligence can help you reorganize your photos and videos around memorable events, such as vacations or family gatherings. You can even create your own Memories, adding a personal touch to your library.
-
Siri Gets a Boost: Siri is also getting a major update. Now, you can type questions and requests to Siri instead of only using voice commands. Siri will also be able to handle requests even if you stutter or interrupt yourself, making interactions smoother. The new Siri interface includes a glowing border around the screen when activated, adding a fresh look to the assistant.
Which Devices Support Apple Intelligence?
Currently, Apple Intelligence is available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the entire iPhone 16 lineup. It’s also supported by M-series iPads and Macs, as well as the A17 Pro-powered iPad mini. However, access is currently limited to those who have their device and Siri language set to US English.
If you're outside the US or use a different language, don't worry—Apple has plans to expand Apple Intelligence. Support for localized English in countries like Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK will be added in December. By April, support will grow to include other languages like French, German, Japanese, and Spanish, among others.
What's Next for Apple Intelligence?
While this is a major rollout, there’s even more to come. Apple recently released developer betas for iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2, which include exciting new features like Genmoji (a custom emoji generator), Image Playground (animated and illustrated image generation), and a Google Lens-like Visual Intelligence feature. So, there’s still plenty to look forward to!
