Apple Reportedly Testing Under-Display Face ID for iPhone 18 Pro Models
Share
Another credible leak is adding momentum to the growing rumor that Apple plans to move Face ID under the display in next year’s iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. According to a new post on Weibo by leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is currently testing this major upgrade, which would mark one of the most significant visual changes to the iPhone’s front in years.
Under-Display Face ID in the Works
Digital Chat Station says both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are being tested with a new under-display Face ID system, paired with what’s called a “single HIAA punch hole”—a method that allows sensors and cameras to sit discreetly beneath the screen. If successful, this move would eliminate the need for the current Dynamic Island, pushing the iPhone toward a cleaner, nearly all-screen design.
Standard Models Stick With Familiar Layout
The leak also confirms that this change is likely to remain exclusive to the Pro models. The iPhone 18 and the upcoming iPhone 18 Air are expected to continue using the current punch-hole layout, which includes cutouts for the front camera and Face ID sensors. That means the Dynamic Island design will stick around for non-Pro iPhones, at least for another year.
Building on Past Reports
This post follows a recent report from The Information, which claimed Apple is working to place not only Face ID, but also proximity and ambient light sensors under the display. That report also hinted at a possible repositioning of the front-facing camera—from its centered location to the top-left corner. While Digital Chat Station doesn’t confirm that specific shift, the overlapping reports suggest that Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro lineup may feature one of the most advanced front displays the company has ever released.
More Changes on the Horizon
As Apple continues to iterate on both hardware and design, this under-display Face ID technology signals a clear push toward a seamless, minimalist look. And with foldables and new launch schedules also in the mix, Apple’s roadmap for iPhones in 2025 and beyond is shaping up to be one of its most ambitious yet.
For now, only the Pro models appear set to receive this futuristic upgrade, leaving fans of the standard lineup waiting a little longer.
